This was the finding of no less than the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), which has found that salt does make people more susceptible to cancer, particularly on the stomach. The recommended daily level is just 6g, but on average, people in UK have been found to have as much as 8.6g of salt in a day.
The Salty Problem
According to the date of WCRF, up to 6,000 cases of stomach cancer are recorded in UK annually. The sadder part is that up to 14% of these cases could have easily been avoided, if only people were conscious about their salt intake.
Particulary when it comes to cases of stomach cancer, it becomes rather difficult to address because it does not necessarily manifest itself until it has fully developed. As a result, the chances of survival become more minimal because of failure to catch it early on.
Of course, that’s not even talking about the other problems that a person can pick up from eating too much salty foods. In effect, they make themselves more prone to heart disease and stroke, as well as kidney problems.
The recommendation of WSRC is for food manufacturers to implement a proper labeling scheme on their products. This is so that consumers can be properly informed whether or not they are already going over the recommended daily intake of salt.
Apart from this move of consumer education, it will also be helpful if the people themselves adopt a healthier lifestyle, taking on a more conscious approach to eating. As much as possible, you probably should stay away from microwavables or canned and processed goods, because you can’t really be aware of how much salt is already there.
